Approval checkpoints are a feature, not a slowdown
The fastest-looking workflow is not always the fastest one. A well-placed approval step often saves more time than it costs because it stops expensive wrong turns before implementation and verification burn more cycles.
One of the easiest mistakes in AI coding workflows is to treat every checkpoint as friction.
An approval step appears, and the reaction is immediate: this is slowing the agent down.
That reaction is understandable. If you compare two workflows only by counting stops, the one with fewer stops looks faster. A graph that goes straight from plan to implementation appears more efficient than a graph that pauses for approval in between.
But that is the wrong benchmark.
The real benchmark is not “How quickly did the agent start coding?” It is “How much time did we spend getting to a result we still wanted after review and verification?”
That is why approval checkpoints are often a feature, not a slowdown. A small human decision at the right moment can prevent a much larger correction later. In software work, correction cost is not linear. The later you discover a misunderstanding, the more context, code, and cleanup you have to pay for.

The false benchmark is first-pass speed
Teams usually call approval “slow” when they are measuring the wrong thing.
They are measuring:
- how quickly the agent reaches implementation,
- how few times a human has to touch the task,
- or how compressed the transcript feels.
Those metrics matter a little, but they are not the ones that decide total throughput.
Throughput comes from finishing correct work with minimal rework.
If approval removes a five-minute pause but creates a two-hour correction later, it did not improve throughput. It only moved the human attention later in the process, when it is more expensive and messier.
This is the same reason teams still review design docs, migration plans, and pull requests even when the people involved are highly capable. Capability does not erase the value of a well-placed checkpoint. It raises the value of making that checkpoint precise.
Approval is cheapest before implementation, not after the diff is large
A useful approval checkpoint lives at the narrowest point where the human can still steer the work cheaply.
In MuxAgent’s default workflow, that point comes after planning and review but before implementation:

The human is not being asked to approve a blank request. They are not being asked to approve a vague prompt. They are approving an approach that has already been externalized and reviewed.
That makes the approval surface smaller and more meaningful.
At that moment, the human can still answer high-leverage questions:
- Is this the right interpretation of the task?
- Are the boundaries correct?
- Does the plan touch the right files and avoid the wrong ones?
- Are the required checks strong enough?
- Is this a task that should proceed now at all?
Once implementation starts, the cost of changing those answers rises fast. The agent may have touched multiple files, followed a now-wrong assumption through several steps, and spent time passing checks that were never the right checks in the first place.
Approval is not valuable because humans like ceremony. It is valuable because it is often the cheapest moment to correct course.
Late corrections are the real slowdown
When people argue against approval, they often imagine a clean world where the agent either succeeds immediately or fails obviously. Real work is uglier than that.
The expensive failures are not usually syntax errors. They are wrong but coherent execution paths:
- the plan solved the wrong problem,
- the scope was wider than intended,
- the repo boundary was misunderstood,
- the environment assumptions were wrong,
- or the checks passed even though the task intent was still off.
Those are the failures that hurt.
Verification helps, but verification is not magic. Tests can pass while the change still solves the wrong thing. A build can succeed while the task has drifted outside the user’s constraints. A code review can catch that later, but later is exactly when the cleanup bill is higher.
Approval reduces the frequency of those failures by forcing one explicit decision before the most expensive phase starts.
That is why approval often improves overall speed. It turns a late, code-heavy correction into an early, plan-level one.
Checkpoints compress human attention to the highest-leverage moments
Another reason approval feels slower than it is: people picture it as broad supervision.
Used well, it is the opposite.
A checkpoint is a way to compress human attention into one small decision surface instead of forcing humans to shadow the entire execution.
That is a better operating model for both people and agents.
Without a defined checkpoint, humans compensate in one of two bad ways:
- they hover too much because they do not trust the task to move without them,
- or they disappear too much because there is no clear moment when intervention is expected.
Approval creates a narrow point where intervention is intentional. The human can stay mostly out of the way until the workflow reaches a state worth judging.
That is particularly valuable when the rest of the graph is already disciplined. If planning, review, implementation, and verification are explicit, approval is not a random interruption. It is one deliberate decision surface in a larger operating contract.
Not every task needs approval, and that is the point
Saying approval is useful does not mean it should appear everywhere.
What matters is that it is a choice tied to the job, not a superstition and not a taboo.
Approval is worth keeping when:
- the task has meaningful blast radius,
- the implementation could be expensive to unwind,
- the request is still somewhat ambiguous even after planning,
- the agent may touch multiple subsystems,
- the repo has sharp trust boundaries,
- or the team is still building trust in how agents handle this category of work.
Approval is easier to skip when:
- the task is small and reversible,
- the change surface is tightly bounded,
- the acceptance criteria are already explicit,
- the cost of a wrong implementation is low,
- and verification will quickly expose the likely failure modes anyway.

Approval is especially valuable when the task still has interpretation risk
The strongest argument for approval is not security theater. It is interpretation risk.
Many coding tasks are not dangerous because the code is hard. They are dangerous because the sentence describing the goal leaves room for multiple valid readings.
That is where approval earns its keep.
A reviewed plan can still reveal:
- an unstated assumption about user intent,
- a hidden dependency,
- a migration sequence that should be split,
- an out-of-scope repo,
- or a verification strategy that is too weak for the claim being made.
If the human catches that before implementation, the fix is often a few lines of feedback. If the same issue shows up after the agent has already edited code, the correction touches planning, implementation, and verification all at once. In other words, approval is cheap precisely when interpretation risk is still high.
Design the approval surface well or it will deserve its bad reputation
Some approval steps really are a waste. They are vague, oversized, and detached from the actual risk.
Bad approval asks a human to bless too much.
Good approval asks a human to answer one narrow, high-value question: should this plan proceed into code changes as written?
That works best when the artifact being approved is clean:
- the task scope is stated directly,
- the write surface is bounded,
- the assumptions are visible,
- the required checks are named,
- and the success condition is testable.
If the approval surface is a giant transcript full of tool logs and half-formed reasoning, then yes, approval will feel like drag. But that is a design problem, not an indictment of checkpoints themselves.
The right answer is not “remove approval forever.” The right answer is “make approval smaller and better.”
Approval is one of the simplest ways to control cost of correction
A useful way to think about workflow design is this: where do you want to spend scarce human judgment?
There are three common options.
- Spend it very early, before the agent has made the work concrete.
- Spend it at a reviewed plan, before implementation.
- Spend it late, after code exists and the correction surface is larger.
Option two is usually the best tradeoff.
It is concrete enough to judge and still cheap enough to change.
That is exactly where approval belongs. It is not a denial of autonomy. It is a cost-control mechanism for ambiguity.
The teams that call approval a slowdown often rediscover this the hard way. They remove the checkpoint, enjoy faster starts for a while, and then start adding informal review messages later in the process because too many tasks reached implementation on shaky assumptions.
That is just approval coming back in a less disciplined form.
Throughput improves when the workflow matches the task
The broader lesson is that speed does not come from removing steps blindly. Speed comes from matching the graph to the job.
If a task is well specified, low risk, and easy to reverse, then removing approval may be exactly right. The autonomous or yolo style tradeoff can make sense there.
If a task is ambiguous, broad, or operationally costly to unwind, then approval is often the faster system because it protects the workflow from expensive wrong turns.
That is what good workflow tooling should do. It should let you choose where human judgment belongs instead of forcing one ideology onto every job.
The goal is not more ceremony. It is fewer expensive surprises.
Approval checkpoints are useful when they are placed at the moment where a small human decision can prevent a large waste of effort.
That is not bureaucracy. That is good engineering economics.
The best AI workflows are not the ones with the fewest visible pauses. They are the ones that keep momentum without hiding risk, ambiguity, or correction cost until later. Sometimes that means removing approval. Sometimes it means keeping it exactly where it is.
